In recent weeks, students in Year 8 and 9 have been designing, researching, and coding apps as part of the Apps for Good programme, which works to unlock the potential of students across the UK and beyond with technology courses.
Students were tasked with developing and creating an iPhone app from scratch which provides solutions to real world problems. During this time, students also received figures and feedback from well-known companies of industry such as Mastercard and Lego to support their product.
As a result of this programme, we are delighted to announce that we have two groups of students, one from Year 8 and Year 9, who have been shortlisted for the National Showcase fnals in the Apps for Good Awards!
Firstly, we have ScanGo from Year 9, in the ‘Future Founders’ category. ScanGo is designed to help consumers save money on their shopping and assist with the cost-of-living crisis which has been taking a toll on many communities. Showing more cost-effective products and options from a variety of stores.
From Year 8, we have A-Z Safety in the ‘Community Champions’ category. This app aims to help victims and people at risk of domestic abuse by providing a discreet way of calling for help. It also offers useful links and information on ways to stay safe, including support contacts.
Both year groups have been entered into the People’s Choice Award, with the entry receiving the most public votes winning.
As we always say at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, our students are capable of competing with students from anywhere if they seize the opportunities provided them, and these teams have done just that. Beating 28,000 other students to reach this point.
People can vote for their favourite app via the Apps for Good website. The results will be revealed on 22nd June.
